Amalfitano had some rather idiosyncratic ideas about jet lag. They weren’t consistent, so it might be an exaggeration to call them ideas. They were feelings. Make-believe ideas. As if he were looking out the window and forcing himself to see an extraterrestrial landscape. He believed (or liked to think he believed) that when a person was in Barcelona, the people living and present in Buenos Aires and Mexico City didn’t exist. The time difference only masked their nonexistence. And so if you suddenly traveled to cities that, according to this theory, didn’t exist or hadn’t yet had time to put themselves together, the result was the phenomenon known as jet lag, which arose not from your exhaustion but from the exhaustion of the people who would still have been asleep if you hadn’t traveled. This was something he’d probably read in some science fiction novel or story that he’d forgotten having read.

He was on a mission, and the mission was accomplished!

Wixel, aka Wim Maesschalck, is pale, skinny-slim, emo-ish looking (minus the make up) flemish guy. Big smile when you speak to him and eyes that lighten up when you ask him about his music (at least from the few times I had the chance to talk to him). I got to him through his music, with his delicious record called Heart, released in 2006.

In 2009 he decided to make music, adding some complications: he was set to release a record for each month. A bit like Sufjan Stevens and his 50 States Project, but with a difference: Wixel actually did complete his mission!

He did release 12 records, one per month. He put the whole lot as pay-as-you- want offer for download at bandcamp.

And I guess I will have to bulk download them all at some time. Soon.
